American Flag
Facts:
On July 4, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed, this
declared the thirteen colonies free and independent states. Plans
were quickly made to design a flag. The colors of the US flag came from
the flag of England, red and white stripes but stars were added on a
blue background to represent each of the colonies. The US flag is the
first national flag in history to be chosen by representatives of the
people of a country, in the past only a nation's ruler had chosen the
flag of a country.
The U.S. congress made
the flag the official flag on June 14, 1777. The lawmakers stated
that "the flag of the United States will be thirteen stripes,
alternate red and white and .. the union be thirteen stars, white
in a blue field, representing a new constellation.
In 1916, President
Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 Flag Day and let each state celebrate
the birthday of the flag as it wished but it was not a national holiday
until 1949 when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 Flag day.
The U.S. flag has
changed over the years as we have grown as nation and added more states,
now the US Flag still has the original 13 stripes but now includes 50
stars to show the 50 states of America.
