U. S. Flag
Facts:
The US flag is the
first national flag in history to be chosen by representatives of the
people of a country, in the past only a nation's ruler had chosen the
flag of a country.
Americans are a flag
conscious nation, more than most other countries. The American
Flag stands for freedom. We show pride in our flag and show it a lot of
respect. There are certain etiquette rules we follow when handling or
displaying the US flag.
The US flag was
designed just after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in
1776. On April 4, 1818
congress passed a law that is still in effect today. "That
the Flag of the United States be 13 horizontal stripes, alternate red
and white and that on the admission of every State into the Union, one
star be added on the Fourth of July next succeeding
admission." The U.S. flag has
changed over the years as we have grown as a nation and added more states,
now the US Flag still has the original 13 stripes but now includes 50
stars to show the 50 states of America.
On July 20, 1969 over
six hundred million people in forty-nine countries watched by television
as the American flag was planted on the moon by the Apollo 11
crew. Many historical events include the US flag, many American's
will tell you of the pride they feel when seeing the flag waving from a
tall flagpole or being carried in a parade.
