Facts:
The United States was formed in 1775 when 13 colonies rose up against
the British. The US established and signed the Declaration of
Independence on July 4, 1776. After the signing of this document
they quickly started on the task of designing a flag for the new nation.
The first flag for the
USA featured 13 stars and 13 alternating red and white stripes as a
symbol of the 13 colonies. This is where the flag received the nickname
"stars and stripes".
The United States flag
of today features 50 stars on blue background which stand for the 50
states of the union with alternating red and white stripes that
represent the 13 original colonies.
