History of the U. S.
Flag
Facts:
The history of the flag is really fascinating. The first
American flag was influenced by the British Red Ensign flag and was
called the Grand Union Flag because it represented the Union of the 13
colonies. The design depicted the British Ensign flag in the corner and
then 13 alternating red and white stripes. This flag was first adapted
in December of 1775.
Later on June 14, 1777
the Grand Union Flag was replaced with a blue canton with white stars
representing the new constellation which now represented the United
States of America. This was approved by the U. S. Congress and made the
official flag of the US. This flag set the precedent for all future flag
designs.
In 1795 another US flag
design change was made when two new states were added to the Union, two
new stars and two new stripes were added to represent the 15 states.
This change set a precedent that for every state added to the U.S. they
planned to add a star and stripe. This flag was nicknamed the "Star
Spangled Banner"
In 1818 the flag went
through another change this time due to the addition of 5 new states
between 1795 and 1817. In 1818 Congress decreed that only new
stars would be added when a state was added to the Union and the flag
would retain the original 13 stripes to represent the 13 original
colonies. The new stars were added on July 4, 1818 and this design is
still in effect today.
